LATEST UPDATES

2015 for Earth To Joy was very much a mixed bag. We thought the year started well with the purchase of a new van, a spanking blue one but then – Bang Lloyd does-in his shoulder (old car accident injury) – Physio and Dry-Needling was required. Ever had dry-needling ? Hmmm. This was just a warm up for later.

The 1st half of the year saw Lloyd get to 9 Orchid Societies for a talk on a variety of Orchid topics. Later in the year we were present at the South West Regional Orchid Conference to sell our wares, show some plants and present a lecture. I love talking away about orchids and get a big kick out of seeing them well received. Getting about also gives me a chance to catch up to friends and meet other orchid growers. 2016 will see me present a paper at the 8th ANOS Conference at Kempsey in September – “Sarcochilus - Next is Now”, this lecture will be a follow up on one of the papers that I presented at the 7th ANOS Conference – “Sarcochilus – Now and Next”.

After a stellar, awesome and memorable start to the year, Lloyd came down in a crashing heap with a bung, very bung shank. 10 weeks on my back then an operation to repair a locked knee, a bucket-handle tear of the medial cartilidge, and the removal of spurs, foreign bodies and cartilidge. I do not do many things in halves. A good 8 weeks on crutches was to follow. Being self-employed if I hadn’t got so much done early in the year I’d of gone spare.

The first 6 months of 2015 saw us Clear about 10 acres, get in roughly 2km of boundary fencing, I installed my Outdoor Wood-fired Oven and got a good roof over the area, put in a couple of retaining walls, had a Laboratory and Light Room built and got to have our longest holiday for 20 years with 2 weeks on Lord Howe Island for Mans an’ I’s 25th Wedding Anniversary, it’s a cracking, awesome place, hey.

Needless to Say August, September and October didn’t see me do much other than the South West Regional Orchid Conference and some pollinating. Mandy stepped up mega-big time and our daughter, Jessie, got stuck in as well. I deadset could not do a thing. Unfortunately we had to cancel our involvement in a few events including the KABI ANOS Spring Show – spewin’ as we have such a great time up there. As I said I did nought barr one event and orchid pollinating – here is a challenge for you, grab a pair of crutches, now put a pollen ball from an orchid on the end of a tooth pick, now balance that ball of pollen on the end of that toothpick while you go done walkways 600mm to 700mm wide and 12m long, on crutches, on one leg. Then try and do it without swearing. Talk about a challenge. Anyway I managed to get a decent amount of pollinating done. Will be exciting to sow our own Sarcs crosses in our own Lab later in 2016.

The last 12 months have seen us register a number of our crosses. Again we have gone for Rock Music inspired names for our Dendrobiums. We have registered our first Sarcochilus in 2015, these are registered with the first name being - Earth’s, ie S. Earth’s Song, S. Earth’s Magic. Though we only attended half the usual number of shows, on the Show bench we received a Reserve Champion, a couple of a Champion Natives, a Champion Seedling and a couple of Champion Specimens. One of our plants - Sarc. Magic ‘Macros’ received an AM/AOC.

I managed to keep busy while flat on my back (couldn’t even play guitar) by doing some Horticulture research, watching cartoons on netflix, and starting a project I’ve wanted to do for some time. Now I’m enjoying being back in the Orchid Houses, getting out in my tinnie or bashing away on my guitar now I’m mobile. Will be bush walking soon. I’m still the President of Camden Haven Orchid Society and am enjoying it a great deal.

Mandy, as I have said carried the nursery and myself for a good while in 2015. She still gets into her Pilates classes and when in town makes plenty of time for a Skim Milk Cappuccino for time away from me. Loves her time on Lord Howe Island and can’t wait to get back there again. Currently Mandy is taking over our daughter’s old bedroom to set up so that she may get back to her Artwork, good news.

Regards for Now,
